George Ross
Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Operating Officer
Ministry of Research and Innovation
George Ross is a long-standing veteran of the Ontario Public Service (OPS) and in June of 2006 began his dual role as Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Operating Officer of the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI). Mr. Ross has a wide range of executive experience, including extensive work with stakeholders, policy and program development, and government operations. Since his arrival at MRI, Mr. Ross has been instrumental in advancing the ministry's innovation agenda, enhancing a culture of innovation excellence, and promoting the province at home and abroad. In a short period of time he has worked extensively with MRI stakeholders to strengthen research excellence within the province.
Previously, Mr. Ross held the position of Assistant Deputy Minister of Field Services at the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). In this capacity, he led one of the largest operational divisions in the OPS. The division is the frontline ministry presence, delivering programs and resource management to diverse regions and stakeholder communities. Stakeholders include industry, environmental organizations, municipalities and aboriginal leaders.
Mr. Ross led MNR's support for key Ontario government initiatives such as the establishment of the Greenbelt aimed at protecting greenspace and containing urban sprawl in the Golden Horseshoe. In addition, he has worked closely with the Ontario Secretariat of Aboriginal Affairs to develop and deliver the government's aboriginal affairs agenda. Recently Mr. Ross completed an assignment with Cabinet Office where he led an energy policy project.
Mr. Ross holds a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo and certificates in Business Administration and Human Resources Management from Ryerson and Queen's Universities. He is also a graduate of the advanced program in Human Resources Management at the Rotman School of Business, University of Toronto.
