Kevin A. Smith
Scientific Advisor
Northern Ontario School of Medicine

Kevin Smith is a Scientific Advisor on collaborative medical education to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. In 1977 he received an MPhil in pure mathematics from Murdoch University in Western Australia and then spent 10 years at the University of London working on the application of massively parallel computing to a wide range of applications from lattice gauge simulations to medical image processing. He returned to Australia in 1990 and joined CSIRO - the Australian Government's main R&D agency. There he set up the joint Australian National University - CSIRO Virtual Environments Laboratory that pioneered the development and application of collaborative hapto-visual environments to surgical training. In 2001, he was the founding Director of the Western Australian Interactive Virtual Environments Centre before moving to Canada in 2003 to be a Strategic Advisor to the National Institute for Nanotechnology.
