Walter Stewart
Senior Advisor, Intelligent Infrastructure
CANARIE

Walter Stewart is an expert in organizational planning for “intelligent” or “cyber-“ infrastructure. His consulting firm, Walter Stewart & Associates, specializes in organizational and strategic planning, with a particular emphasis on technology and intelligent infrastructure, and consults with public, private and not-for-profit organizations. Walter has worked with organizations such as Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), CANARIE, Global Grid Forum, other high-tech companies, and major research and educational institutions around the world.

In his role as senior advisor in intelligent infrastructure to CANARIE, Walter engages key players in government, universities, funding agencies, not-for-profit associations and the private sector with a view to develop a pan-Canadian strategy to integrate and advance cyberinfrastructure to serve research and the wider economy.

From 2000 to 2005, Walter worked at SGI Canada as Director of Global Marketing and as Manager of Market Development for the research and education sectors. He worked with colleagues around the world expanding SGI’s relationships with the research and education communities, particularly in the areas of high performance computing, high performance visualization, and networked collaborative intelligence.

Before joining SGI, Walter was the second president of SMART Toronto, a non-profit corporation dedicated to ensuring that Toronto thrives as a centre for digitally enabled creation and distribution.

Prior to his involvement with SMART Toronto, Walter was the Dean of Communications and Development at Centennial College. He played a major role in the development of the Bell Centre for Creative Communications, one of North America's pre-eminent centres for multimedia training. Working with his colleagues, Walter's particular role was in the securing of over $17 million of private sector investment in the centre and the development of unique partnerships between a public sector institution and various businesses in hardware, software, and connectivity.

Walter has taught and been an educational administrator in British Columbia, the central Arctic, Japan, and Ontario. He holds an honours degree in history from Simon Fraser University and a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of British Columbia.
