Dr. Alan George
Associate Provost, Information Systems and Technology
Interim Dean of Graduate Studies

University of Waterloo

One of Canada's leading research contributors to the field of mathematics and computer science, Dr. Alan George is best known for his contributions to the field of numerical linear algebra, specifically for having developed efficient algorithms for solving very large sparse systems of equations. This work has found widespread application, from the design of aircraft and fuel efficient cars, to modelling climate change, to analyzing the stresses on large structures. Dr. George was recently awarded the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society's annual research prize, which recognizes "innovative and exceptional research contributions in an emerging area of applied or industrial mathematics."

In addition to his many scientific contributions and the positions in which he currently serves, Professor George has also served the University of Waterloo in other senior administrative positions, including Vice President, Academic & Provost; Vice President, University Research; and long-time Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics.

He was a Distinguished Scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from 1986 to 1988. He has been a consultant to various companies and government agencies in Canada, the United States, and Britain, including the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (U.K.), IBM (U.S.), the U.S. Depts. of Energy and Agriculture, Boeing Computer Services, COMPAQ Computer Corp., the NASA Langley Research Center, and the Canada Centre for Inland Waters.
