Call for entries - 2006 ORION Awards

The ORION Award is introducing two new categories this year, to recognize achievements in research, and in education and learning.

The new ORION Award, launched last year, recognizes individuals and groups in Ontario's research and education (R&E) community that have successfully championed and demonstrated the use of advanced networks and collaborative technologies in scientific research, teaching or learning.

ORION anticipates receiving several submissions by the Friday, May 5, 2006 deadline.

The new ORION Discovery Award category will recognize initiatives enabled by advanced networks that have or can achieve significant outcomes in science, research and discovery. The ORION Learning Award category will recognize projects or initiatives that make use of ORION and advanced networks for collaborative teaching, learning and training.

The ORION Leadership Award, introduced last year, recognizes the achievements of individuals for their contribution to advanced networking, or individuals or teams for their vision and successful implementation of initiatives that have had a transformative impact in the way researchers, educators and learners do their work.

"Ontario's R&E community is brimming with new and innovative projects and success stories," said ORION President/CEO Phil Baker. "By recognizing and showcasing these achievements, we can help inspire new ideas and further innovation," he said.

The ORION Award is open to individuals or groups within organizations currently connected to the ORION network. Nominees may be staff, faculty and or students of the organizations and can include representatives of partner organizations. Submissions will be accepted online and in writing.

Projects or initiatives should ideally involve partners from more than one participating institution/organization, not excluding innovative partnerships with the private sector.

A panel of five judges, with representation from the ORION stakeholder community, will review submissions and select winners. Judges will look for entries that demonstrate the use of shared resources and capabilities among institutions and organizations, and will consider their current and future impact in terms of potential adoption by the broader research and education community.

The awards will be presented June 5, 2006 during the 2006 Ontario R&E Summit at the MaRS Discovery District facilities.
