Students hone skills at Olympics
With the Winter Olympics on home turf this year, many Ontario students are in Vancouver getting the chance of a lifetime to hone their skills in their chosen fields. Among them are Ryerson University journalism and Radio & Television Arts students working as camera operators, field producers and reporters; students from Seneca College's School of Communication Arts who are working on CTV's online coverage, working as video and photo editors; and five Broadcast Television Production students from Confederation College who are working as associate directors and TV production assistants for the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
More Ontario funds for SNOLAB
Ontario is investing more than $9 million through the Ontario Research Fund to support 120 researchers at Laurentian University and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNOLAB). Recipients include SNOLAB researchers Dr. Mark Boulay and Dr. Mark Chen, who are leading research related to dark matter - tiny particles that are key to understanding the nature of the universe. Their research team will use state-of-the-art technology 2,000 metres below ground to advance our understanding of how dark matter affects the universe. Read more at www.news.ontario.ca/mri.
ORION looks at interactive media platform
ORION is exploring the feasibility of supporting a new interactive digital media platform service for postsecondary institutions and other agencies. The platform, which could support "YouTube-like" distribution and content sharing, would be provided as an ORION service with digital and social media service partners. It would address multiple types of content, including video, music, photography, animation, including lectures and potentially, content meta tagging and storage. A provincial steering committee and working groups, with representatives from colleges, universities and other institutions have met to map out requirements for a potential service. "Our institutions are looking for more than a content distribution platform," says ORION Director of Communications Andre Quenneville, and chair of the project steering committee. "They are also interested in being part of a shared content creation and collaboration workspace that can support academic assignments and digital asset management." ORION hopes to launch a pilot with Ontario schools later this year as part of the network's new suite of value-added services.
