Rewarding next generation of research and innovation talent
$2.5M for new Ontario awards program
Researchers and entrepreneurs have until Nov. 30 to submit a nomination for two new Ontario award programs that recognize and reward the next generation of research and innovation talent.
"These world-class awards programs will help us attract and retain the best and brightest minds so that Ontario continues to compete and win in the global economy," said Premier and Minister of Research and Innovation Dalton McGuinty.
The programs have a combined value of $2.5 million.
The new Premier's Catalyst Awards consists of five annual awards to innovative entrepreneurs and companies to help them move their ideas and breakthrough technologies to national and international marketplaces.
Individual awards of $200,000 will recognize Best young innovator; Innovator of the year; Lifetime achievement in innovation; Start-up company with the best innovation; and Company with the best innovation.
The new Premier's Discovery Awards include four annual awards totalling $1.5 million to researchers in recognition of their discoveries and achievement in life sciences and medicine, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, and innovation leadership.
Institutions may submit applications on behalf of eligible researchers, including Ontario publicly-assisted universities, Ontario colleges of applied arts and technology, Ontario research hospitals, or not-for-profit research institutes associated with an Ontario university or hospital.
"Our future prosperity depends on our ability to create an environment that supports and rewards innovation - so we can grow companies, encourage entrepreneurship, support research and improve interaction between academia and industry," added McGuinty
The deadline for nominations for both awards is Thursday, November 30, 2006.
