Urging continued support for CANARIE - critical to innovation

Funding for CANARIE beyond March 2007 is under consideration by the federal government, and the leadership of Ontario's research and education community wants to make sure Ottawa is aware of CANARIE's critical importance to Ontario and to research and innovation in the country.

CANARIE operates Canada's CAnet 4 backbone network infrastructure and its mandate is up for renewal.

Writing to Industry Minister Maxime Bernier, ORION President/CEO Phil Baker notes that Ontario's postsecondary institutions, teaching hospitals and other research institutions rely on CANARIE to provide critical links to national and international partners and globally leading research initiatives.

"To lead, and not fall behind, in collaborative, next generation research work, we in Canada need the critical national enabling infrastructure provided by CANARIE," said Baker. "It binds together our research expertise and capabilities across the country, supporting a greater national research enterprise and creative community. It gives our researchers and innovators a boost up in the rapidly evolving 21st Century research world."

"Without CANARIE's leadership in providing a national enabling infrastructure, our capabilities to undertake globally leading research and participate in major international 'big science' projects would be severely diminished," he says.

Other Ontario organizations and post-secondary institutions are writing the minister in the weeks ahead in support of renewal of funding, including Dr. Ross Paul, President of the University of Windsor and Chair of the Ontario Council of Universities. He was also founding chair of ORANO, which owns and operates the ORION network.

Other interested supporters are invited to join the campaign and to write Minister Bernier.
