This year, we continued to invest in our network, products and service offerings, giving researchers, educators and innovators the digital tools they need.
ORION is more than just a trusted source of affordable access to one of the world’s fastest R&E networks. We also provide cost-effective Internet service and free, highly resilient DNS services to our customers. And we have been working with the government on behalf of our community as an advisor on digital infrastructure projects.
This year, we continued to invest in our network, products and service offerings, giving researchers, educators and innovators the digital tools they need to make Ontario a global leader in innovation. We work with our advisory groups to stay actively engaged with our community, ensuring that we’re always responding to the needs of Ontario’s researchers, educators and innovators. Guided by their input and priorities, we:
- Rolled out new security offerings to help our community comply with security standards.
- Improved internet transit performance by adding more peers and diversifying internet providers.
- Evaluated network-based security services.
- Piloted last-mile solutions to bring savings to our community.
- Made further network enhancements and brought a new point of presence online in Kingston.
In 2017, we also introduced a shared Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) pilot initiative to address information privacy and cyber security challenges. The two-year pilot project has been launched in partnership with eight higher education institutions in Ontario and has already achieved several key milestones. We have identified priorities based on group input and the findings of a security gap assessment. Workshops have been held on threat risk assessment, computer network defense, security governance, data privacy regulations, breach coaching and payment card security. Beyond that, initial input has also been given for the technical requirements for shared security information and event management. The project has been very well received, generating positive media coverage and earning a nomination for a 2017 Canadian Higher Education Information Technology (CANHEIT) award.
It’s all a part of ORION’s ongoing commitment to support the researchers, educators, and innovators who make Ontario a global leader.
