Dino Miele, Information & Communications Technology Innovator in K–12 Education, Joins ORION Board

Toronto, December 11, 2017 – ORION is pleased to welcome Dino Miele to the ORION Board of Directors. Dino brings more than 35 years of experience in the information and communications technology industry to his board seat. In past and present roles, he has provided invaluable strategic and operational leadership to create and support robust, secure information technology environments for 21st century learning.

“ORION is the only network in Ontario dedicated to research and education, so we are thrilled to have an education technology leader like Dino to guide us,” says Alfonso Licata, President and CEO of ORION. “His input will help us align with school board priorities and ensure ORION continues to bring value to this important part of our provincial innovation ecosystem.”

As the Chief Information Officer at the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) in St. Catharines, Dino spearheaded key projects to modernize digital infrastructure, specifically creating a new, state-of-the-art data centre that houses a central networking site to connect with the Niagara Regional Broadband Network—making shared services available to the entire Niagara community.

He also founded ihub, the first educational technology incubator in North America to be located inside a converted K–12 school. As a physical and virtual space for the collaboration of educators, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and educational technology companies, ihub supports the development of innovative educational approaches, tools and resources. It operates in partnership with the DSBN, Brock University and Niagara College, so that Niagara youth can explore groundbreaking start-up ideas.

“ORION is a key partner in Ontario’s education digital infrastructure which opens up greater collaboration opportunities for the K12 community,” says Dino. “I’ve seen the positive outcomes when communities work together on technology initiatives and this is what ORION is all about.”

In addition to serving as CEO of ihub and Canada’s largest educational technology conference, CONNECT, Dino is president of the Niagara CIO Consortium (NCC), which brings together the region’s health, education and government entities to help promote a healthy social, economic and environmental ecosystem.

Dino’s experience and expertise has garnered him a 2015 ORION Leadership Award as well as a membership position with ORION’s School Board Advisory Group.
