ORION launches Internet service for Ontario research, education and innovation

(Toronto) – Ontario’s Research and Innovation Optical Network (ORION) announced today that Internet service is now available to its member organizations across the province. Ontario’s school boards, colleges, universities, and research institutions can already connect to cloud-based services via ORION’s high-speed fibre optic network. Now, they will also have access to Internet service from the same trusted partner.

This new service is being introduced in response to member demand. “ORION’s Nexus project – a year-long strategic planning process – gave us a chance to listen closely to the leaders of our connected institutions,” said Brad Gray, Director of Business Development and Strategic Alliances, ORION. “And one message we heard loud and clear was, ‘We want ORION to provide Internet.’”

In addition to the convenience of a single source for all their connectivity needs, there is a financial advantage for ORION’s member organizations. “We buy Internet access in bulk and pass the savings along to our members,” Gray said. ORION’s new Internet offering brings highly competitive pricing to the entire province– including those in rural and northern communities. “This new service from ORION helps bridge the digital divide.”

In its implementation of this service, ORION has considered best practices from other Canadian research and education network organizations including ORION’s peer networks in British Columbia and Quebec where they have successfully introduced this service. As ORION works to improve access to educational content and enhanced research opportunities, this new core service will bring more of the world to Ontario’s research, education, and innovation institutions.
